Painting With Light Semester Project

Painting with light proved to be a little bit more difficult when you're subjects already wearing the light. I left the Christmas lights on the whole time but also lit her up with a little LED flashlight. It was weird figuring out where I could shine the flashlight without screwing up the Christmas lights. I think I eventually got it pretty good though.

Book Cover Semester Project

I originally didn't think I was going to like this but I ended up really loving it. I did a million pictures of Cari and only one picture of Kayla. Even though I liked the lighting on Cari's pictures more, Kayla's fit the book cover super well. I'd never used Photoshop up until now and we have a hate/love relationship now. It can help out a buuunch with some stuff but it's also super confusing and can really screw you up if you don't pay attention.

Depth of Field Semester Projects

This was a happy accident I took during Hairspray. It was semi accident semi purposeful. I really liked how there were layers of people up until you got to Ellen. This is one of my favorites.

These next three were ones I did in class over a picture I found on the internet. Smith showed me how to use the flash down and off to one side. It was really cool but it took a lot of tries to get what I wanted.

The black and white picture was originally going to be my book cover but it didn't look enough like the book for me to be satisfied. It was super bright and sunny outside and took soooo long to get it to a point where their hands didn't just look like a big ball of light. I  had the same problem with the picture under this one. They were plant boxes that students were working on and inches above the boxes were these super bright lights. I sort of have a problem with getting lighting correct on the first try but both of these images helped me with that a lot.

Alex and I had had this idea for a looong time. When we finally did them they turned out much better than I thought they would. Because her face was so close, I had to keep moving to get focused correctly.

Hannah Patt and I were talking about DOF pictures the other day and we started playing around with everybody's class rings and this is what came out. It wasn't really a challenge or anything but it was fun.

Another ATPI picture from my Rebel.
I just really liked the depth of field on it. I actually took this picture multiple times before I got what I had in my head. I still feel like something's wrong with it, but I'm pretty satisfied.

Sorting Out My Crap

I entered this picture in ATPI this week. It's one I actually took with my Rebel this summer. I don't have much to say about the picture but Smith wants us to reflect on how easy or how difficult it's been up till now. The photography class hasn't been difficult really, it's just been my schedule. I've been pretty disappointed in myself as far as my pictures go. Junior year is kickin my butt and my images are paying the price. I feel like I've been working hard but haven't been able to put my all into it. I was really really disappointed in some of my ATPI pics. First of all, I only did the minimum. Nine pictures. That's all. Second of all, I was truly 100% happy with only a few of them. I thought the others were "alright" pictures but they weren't the best I could do. I'm trying to sort out a lot of my crap so that I can finally start putting way more into photography.

ISO: 100
Shutter Speed: 5.6
Aperture: 1/30
I was working on my shallow depth of field for this picture. I ended up getting a reallllly good one that I reallllly liked and then it was super under exposed and I couldn't save it. I think I mostly learned that you shouldn't be skimpy when you're trying something new. Take as many shots as you possible can.

Homecoming

I'm not really putting this picture up because it's an amazing picture or anything. I'm putting it up because it was one of the only good ones I got from Saturday night. I had to shoot the Homecoming dance this past Saturday. It's pretty difficult just because everyone's moving and there're a bunch of different lights. I basically failed at that. I wasn't sure what to do to get good shots and ended up having to ask for help on my settings. It wasn't a good night for me but I learned from failing (even though it's the most annoying thing ever).

Alex

Shutter Speed: 8.0
ISO: 400
Aperture: 1/200
Alex and I have been planning on doing some shots like this for a looong time. It helped me figure out where and how to focus posed shots because I was having some difficulty with that earlier. It was mostly just a for fun shot.

Graduation

For an assignment, I had to get a picture of someone in a graduation cap and gown against a blue sky. I was super proud of the pictures I got!
ISO: 400
Aperture: 2.8
Shutter Speed: 1/6400

The Beautiful Hannah Patterson

Smith was teaching us about portraits and angles and everything and then sent us out with a partner to work on it. I took a couple of decent ones and really liked the way they turned out.

Class of '10

My ISO was 800 and F-stop was 2.5
All us little juniors had to go to a meeting about class rings today and I was checking out Kenzie's to see what she had decided to do. Just playing around with the macro.
